Ep.15 Peppermint Betta Tank (Snail-Eating Leeches) No filter, No CO2, NO ferts Nano Tank

Kartoffel is a wild betta species called Mahachai betta. Peppermint started out strong and then it grew too tall. I was going to cut the tops off, but I wasn’t sure if the plants would recover after that, so I used bonsai wires. It worked out in the end. However, the peppermint plant grew too much and it can’t get enough light, now. I suppose it’s time for a new plant.
The pest snails and hydra was taking over this tank, too. Many months ago, I added some giant duckweed from the volcano tank, and they must’ve hitchhiked on them. In the video, it doesn’t seem like there are lots of them, but the infestation was out of control. With the snail population exploding, algae bloom has gotten worse in this tank, too.
I ended up using snail leeches: Alboglossiphonia lata = Glossiphonia weberi lata
(Family Glossiphoniidae, Order Rhynchobdellida, Class Hirudinea, Phylum Annelida).
They will disappear on their own once the snails(food) are all gone.

Kartoffel has been battling fin rot. It would heal, and then it would come back. I have three different types of medicines for it, but I’m waiting to see if it would heal on its own by doing big water changes and feeding him more substantial foods.

(*For salinity, I’m going by the 1 table spoon per liter rule. However, depending on the salt, you might want to try up to 2 table spoons.)

  • Love your videos, they reminded me why I have an aquarium and that I should give it more love. By the way, the reason why the spinach, lettuce and probably the peppermint (but it could also be easily available nutrients on the latter) behaved that way is because they can't handle the heat or your light cycle is to long, either way the result is bolting. Hope this helps :)

  • The snail eating leaches are interesting, I have never seen that before. Out of curiosity why did you go with the leaches over assassin snails to deal with the infestation? I am curious what parameters are used to judge between these two options for snail removal.

  • hello! For Foo or anyone else who can help - have you ever struggled to get your betta to accept (frozen) live food? I have a little mahachai as well, I would've thought giving a wild betta bloodworms or daphnia or mysis shrimp would make him go nuts, but nope, he chews a bit and spits it all out and only accepts pellets -_- has anyone ever trained their betta to take live food?

  • What kind of nano fish will eat snail leeches though

    Angel FerreiraAngel FerreiraHace 3 meses
  • If you cut the tops off the mint (the apex buds) it would promote side growth, and you’d get bushier longer lasting plants. If you cut off their flower buds and trim the ends of the plants as they get longer than you’d like they’ll last indefinitely. If the plant gets bigger than you’d like you can take a small cutting of it and put it in water, and then you’ll have a new mint plant in a few days. Please like this so he’ll see!

  • I watched your sweet potato tank series and it made me think. Every-time you clipped the roots a little bit of the plant would die off. I was wondering if you could put the roots in one of those mesh fry holders so the plants roots are still able to grow and still take the nutrients from the water. I was thinking about doing something like that with a pothos house plant. I’d love to see something like that on your channel :)
