5 Months Update Baby Food, Shrimplets, Brine Shrimp, Infusoria, NO filter, NO CO2, NO Ferts 5 Gallon

This is 5 months update. The fish are called Sparkling or Pygmy gourami.

How to hatch brine shrimp: It’s very straight forward. I used lukewarm tap water. No water conditioner. Cheap sea salt - same as aquarium salt. The brine shrimp lasted around 3~4 days in the plastic bottle after they hatched. The temperature in the tank was around 27°C or 81°F. I did stir the floating eggs a few times after setting it up.

How to culture infusoria: I used water from this planted tank. I siphoned water around the plants and around the gravel to catch some infusoria. I boiled the fresh spinach for around 10 minutes until the leaves were completely soft. I did this so that the bacteria would break it down much easier and quicker. You can use other veggies like lettuce or cabbage. I also added an algae wafer. But it seemed like it’s not completely necessary. Just after 24 hours of setting this up, the water had become cloudy white. That meant the bacteria bloom had occurred. Infusoria eats bacteria. This thing later did stink, though. It took around 6 days for the enough infusoria to colonize for me to use it.

About the baby pygmy gouramis:
In hindsight, I should’ve moved the babies to their own tank in the beginning.
But I didn’t want the pair to keep breeding.
In hindsight, I should’ve removed the parents earlier.
In hindsight, I should’ve made infusoria first.
In hindsight, I should’ve known an Amano might get to the fry, allegedly.
I think some were eaten by the parents, then lack of food, then the amano, all contributed to the dwindling numbers. I didn’t know there were less of them. I always thought some were hiding in the thick foliage.

The ones that survived are all different in size. Several are big and healthy, and there’s one that looks exactly the same size as a month ago! That one only eats infusoria, still. But all of them are doing well.

I’m still feeding TetraMin Baby every day hoping they would eat it one day. The uneaten food is used up by the shrimp.

  • Many of you are asking the same question. There are 2 Amanos, and a few wild shrimp in the tank. The wild shrimp are breeding. There's actually one adult female wild shrimp in the tank. This is her second time carrying eggs.

  • Hi, I was wondering if you could do a video on how you prepare live food for your fish? One example is how you hatched your brine shrimp in this video, but also info like where you get the eggs from, what should we be looking out for when hatching eggs, etc... Tips and tricks you've learned along the way would be sooo helpful!!! I've never even heard of infusoria before this video. Would be helpful to know more :)

Daddy fish goes through all that trouble, moving the bubble nest, protecting babies from the big bad camera and the other males, mom and dad take care of the littler worm-lookin fishy habies hangin outa their eggs, and then once all that hard work pays off, once all the babies are finally looking like actual fish... they eat them. Wtf.

  • I must comment on your channel. My young daughter is the one that is really into this hobby, her knowing so incredibly much about the science of it I started to get interested myself (more the plant side-which is how i came across your videos). And i've watched easily 100's of videos on both fish and planted aquariums. You had more information in your first video than i was able to gather from at least 50 other videos on planted aquariums -Walstad method. I even read her book (really science journal articles- which were Fabulous) but putting all that info into real life experience i have not been lucky enough to find UNTIL You. Any other videos of the subject i think were more ESwindowrs rather than aquarists interested in sharing the info, because anytimes plants didnt work, they maybe would just mention it, but would not explain possibly whys, No explanations, worried more about things looking well rather than sharing the mistakes or issues that came up. THAT is the true learning process and without that all you have is a glorified advertisement. I did try the Walstad (dirty) method once but didnt have a great setup and after watching this there were SO many things i did incorrectly. I was actually getting frustrated and was not able to find out how i was going wrong until i watched your first video. You have given me new encouragement and i now again have a cute little 5.5 gallon that i am going to try to set up again. And with covid, i have no job and at home all day. You have no idea how much joy this does and will bring to me! VIDEO CRITIQUE. Your videos are complete, thorough, VERY educational, explanatory -even when you didnt know yourself!, Not to mention great cinematography (if you will), and fantastic editing.- you knew just when to speed things up and when to show slow processes. As someone that has been in the field of research for 15 years and as someone who's done digVid in the past I am very impressed with this. WHAT you show and HOW you have chosen to show it is very impressive. And This doesnt begin to mention the INCREDIBLE way you have made these SO relaxing and exciting at the same time. Yes Foo the FLowerhorn, i am very impressed and so very please to have found your videos. THANK YOU.

  • Trying to explain to my partner why I love watching these is quite difficult, it’s reality tv without the fluff and I love it. I like how you really bring life to these creatures, and make their patterns noticeable. I’ve never been into fish tanks but you make it easy to understand, and see progression. This is my second round of watching these videos(some maybe more), and I really love it. I had really bad panic attacks and I feel watching this really helps.
